GLSS-Great Lakes Super Sprints

Lucky 7s! Horstman Earns 7th GLSS Win of the Season from 7th

Lake Odessa, MI - Nearly two-dozen cars were on the property Friday night at I-96 Speedway for the MacAllister CAT Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP to kick off a doubleheader weekend of racing. After a couple weeks of struggles, Jared Horstman returned to championship form in an impressive performance.

Scotty Thiel, the most recent winner at I-96 with GLSS, led the field to the green flag alongside 2016 GLSS champion, Chase Ridenour. Thiel jumped out to the early lead in turn one, but fifth starting Dustin Daggett was quickly on his heels going into turn three and nearly led the opening lap. A caution just three laps in set the stage for great racing inside the top five.

From the seventh spot, Jared Horstman was methodically working up the ladder. Running fifth on lap five, calamity unfolded in front of Horstman when Chase Dunham and Chase Ridenour came together at the exit of turn four. The contact sent Dunham flipping into the catch fence on the front stretch and Ridenour pirouetting in the air. As the two were wrecking, Horstman caught a piece of the action with the nose wing of his No.17. Dunham and Ridenour were ok but unable to continue.

As the field was refired after the red flag, Thiel’s Ragged Edge Racing No.51 wouldn’t lock into gear, prompting a trip to the work area and realigning Thiel at the tail of the field. That handed the lead over to Daggett, and thanks to the crash and Thiel’s mechanical issues, Horstman was now in second.

On the restart, Daggett was able to keep his distance from Horstman; anywhere from half a second to a second the advantage. With two laps to go, Daggett tried to pass a lapped car on the bottom of turns one and two, unable to complete the pass, Daggett lost all momentum and Horstman was able to get to his inside down the backstretch and complete the pass in three and four.

The race wasn’t over yet for Horstman, with Championship rival Max Stambaugh, who was running sixth, ahead of him, Horstman threaded the needle between the No.71H and the outside wall to put distance between himself and Daggett. Thiel rallied back to finish third, Ryan Ruhl fourth, and Mike Keegan completed the top five.

The next event for the Great Lakes Super Sprints is Saturday, August 16th at Butler Motor Speedwya in Quincy, MI. The GLSS will be in action alongside the weekly 410 Sprint Cars. Fans who can’t make the trip can catch all the action live on www.GreatLakesSprints.TV.
