GLSS-Great Lakes Super Sprints

DAGGETT WINS FIRST RACE AT WINSTON

Rothbury, MI – Dustin Daggett (Portland, MI) gets his 3rd win of the season tonight with Great Lakes Super Sprints presented by Engine Pro & ARP, while visiting Winston Motor Speedway for the first time since the series was founded in 2015.

With tonight being our first visit to Winston, there were a few logistical issues we needed to work out to keep the show moving smoothly. With all entrance and exits to the track being from the top of turn 4, Winston and GLSS officials put together a plan.

For qualifying, we rolled all 21 cars to the infield and pushed off 3 cars at a time. As they finished qualifying, the cars would cut thru the infield and shoot right off the track in turn 4.

Daggett went out in the 3rd group and was the TI22 Performance Fast Qualifier. His average lap was ran in 12.295 seconds or at an average speed of 109.8 mph. Tylar Rankin (Coldwater, MI), Jared Horstman (Cloverdale, OH), Phil Gressman (Fremont, OH) and Dan McCarron (Britton, MI) rounded out the top 5 qualifiers.

In the Engler Machine & Tool Heat 1, Brad Lamberson (Parma, MI) started on the poll and finished first. Daggett and Phil Gressman (Fremont, OH) rounded out the top three.

Tylar Rankin won the Jim Coffey & Sons Plumbing & Heating Heat 2. Starting 4th, Rankin moved up to first with Sams and Dalman rounding out the top 3rd.

In the Beacon and Bridge Markets Heat 3, Kyle Poortenga (Woodland, MI) started on the poll, but held a charging Max Stambaugh (Elida, OH) and Jared Hortstman who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

After a great fireworks display, the field of 21 sprint cars were fired on the track and quickly rolled in the damp track. The nearly standing room only crowd was treated to the 4 wide salute by the drivers. Daggett and Rankin then broke from the 4 wide and quickly lined up and took the field to the green flag.

As the flag dropped the field of cars raced down the front stretch and charged into turn 1 and 2. As the leaders flew into turns 3 and 4, the spacing was good across the whole field and Daggett was leading at the end of the first lap. Averaging nearly 110 mph, the leaders caught up to lap traffic in only 5 laps. As Daggett, Sams and Stambaugh started weaving thru traffic, they slowed to a pedestrian average speed of 95 mph.

Just as we thought we would go all 25 laps green, a caution came out for a car that looped in the bottom of 1 and 2. As the caution car gets refired, the field starts single file and the leaders, with clean air and no cars in front of them, are quickly back up to the 108-110 mph range. The race to the checker for the final 9 laps was over in just 2 minutes as Daggett, Sams and Stambaugh took the checkered about 2-4 seconds apart.

Eli Lakin (Buchanan, MI) was tonights Hoosier Racing Tires Hard Charger, starting 20th and driving up 7 spots to finish 13th. Rookie Bobby Elliott (Allenton, MI) drove up 6 spots to finish 8th tonight!

The next scheduled Great Lakes Super Sprints presented by Engine Pro & ARP show, will be Friday, July 15th as wings and non-wings take the track at Hartford Motor Speedway in Hartford, MI.
