"It's About Frickin’ Time!" Gressman Wins GLSS Regular Season Finale at Crystal
Crystal, MI - Nearly two dozen cars turned out on Sunday afternoon for the season finale with the MacAllister CAT Great Lakes Super Sprints Presented by PERFIT & ARP. On the line, a Tour Championship for Max Stambaugh and a Michigan Championship for Jared Horstman. Also on the line was the final chance to win a points-paying event in 2025.
Phil Gressman led the field to green alongside Stambaugh with Horstman and Dustin Daggett behind them. Gressman set the pace into lapped traffic but couldn’t seem to shake his fellow former GLSS Champions. Daggett, Horstman, and Stambaugh all stayed right with “The Ohio Gas Man” through the heavy traffic.
Daggett tried many different lines to find a way around Gressman, including nearly losing control of his No.85 on the top of turn four. Gressman, however, held consistent speed on the bottom of Crystal Motor Speedway.
With 10 laps to go, the first caution of the night flew when Daggett clipped the front tire of Jim Girard, sending him around in turn four. On the restart, Gressman held pace at the front, but Canadian, Darren Dryden, made it known he came to play, getting by Daggett and Stambaugh in one lap. As Dryden was working to close in on Horstman for second, the caution flew for a second time as the 10S of Jay Steinebach came to a stop in turn four with a cut right rear tire.
With four laps to go, Gressman brought the field back to the green flag with eyes on his first win since August of 2024. While coming down the backstretch during the white flag lap, Dustin Daggett came to a stop off the track in turn one with a flat right rear tire. The yellow set up a green/white/checkered finish for Gressman, with Horstman and Dryden now right behind him.
The restart proved to be no issue for Gressman, who won by over 1.2 seconds ahead of Horstman and Dryden who rounded out the podium. The win was Gressman’s first since August 24, 2024 at Waynesfield Raceway Park.
“It’s about frickin’ time,” Gressman said in Victory Lane. “It’s been a long, trying summer. Everybody behind me with Marshall [Campbell], my son, my grandkids, daughter in law; they go up and down the road with us, it’s nothing easy, so for everybody to stick together - anybody can go through the good times, it’s the trying times when you find out what kind of team you have and we’ve just stuck tight, kept working hard, and had a few tough conversations.”
The next event for the Great Lakes Super Sprints is Friday, September 19th at Eldora Speedway as part of the 4-Crown Nationals. The non-points event will be held alongside the High Limit Racing Sprint Cars and USAC Silver Crown. Advanced tickets are available at EldoraSpeedway.com. Ryan Conium won the Ti22 Performance Fast Qualifier Award.
Phil Gressman won Engler Machine & Tool Heat Race One.
Darren Dryden won Beacon & Bridge Markets Heat Race Two.
Max Stambaugh won Miami Paint Heat Race Three.
Chase Ridenour was the Operating Engineers 324 Hard Charger.
